The UK Trade & Investment BioEntrepreneurial Company of the Year Awards 2007 took place at Lancaster House, London, on 4th July from 12.00 - 8.15pm. Now in its second year, the Awards competition showcased UK biotechnology and provided a networking opportunity to find out how UK Trade & Investment can assist the growth of your company.
This year, UK Trade & Investment focused on regional strengths in bioscience through two Awards:
- The UK Innovation in Drug Discovery and Development Award recognises the contribution a company makes to the UK's dominant position in the development of innovative new medicines
- The UK Innovation in Enabling Biotechnology Award recognises the role research plays in developing technologies that facilitate drug discovery and development
A third Award, The UK Special Award, recognises those companies who have made sales in a new territory with the help and assistance of their regional international trade advisors, or devolved regional support organisation.

Who Nominated the Companies?
Competitors for the two regional Awards were nominated by their regional representative body, UK Trade & Investment International Trade Advisor or devolved regional body.
What happened at the Awards?
For the 2007 Awards Ceremony, the stakes were raised by the introduction of an 'Elevator Pitch' round. Nominated companies each presented a 90-second pitch to a judging panel of highly experienced biotech and pharma individuals, chaired by Dr Ian Gibson, MP, who were charged with deciding which three companies go through to the semi-finals for each Award. Winners were decided in a final round of 10 minute presentations. See the Event Programme for details.
One of the highlights of the day was the presentation of the UK Trade & Investment Outstanding Achievement Award to Peter Chambre, the former CEO of Cambridge Antibody Technology who was responsible for the company in the years preceding its much-publicised acquisition by AstraZeneca.
What are the Benefits?
Nominated companies competed for a National Award, endorsed by HM Government. They presented to, and networked with, an audience of executives from biotech, global pharma and venture fund management. UK Trade & Investment representatives were present to make contact and provide assistance to lifescience companies to break into new markets. All nominated companies have an entry in the Awards Brochure and the competition, including the winners, will be given extensive publicity through Scrip.
